I was in the Hays KS area in April and had the pleasure of dining here again, the first time being 3 years ago. Bunker Hill is now a small hamlet and there isn't much there except this restaurant, which began life as the drug store in the early 1900's. Everything is made fresh, including homemade items such as dressings, bread, jellies and deserts. The menu includes exotic items such as Kansas buffalo and seafood, the latter being exotic for the middle of the continent. :) The pièce de résistance, at least for me, is that this is one of the few establishments that will cook your steak "Real Rare or Just Dead"! Note that it is only open Thursday through Saturday for dinner, and reservations are recommended as it is a small, intimate place that is a favorite of the area residents. Also keep in mind that it is cash only.

This is an out of the way little town with an out of the way little steak house, but it is fully worth the trek. My father has been visiting this restaurant for 30+ years and swears the quality of the steaks has not gone down one bit. I have to agree. The flavor is fantastic and the quality is always the best. This is high-end big city dining in a quaint unassuming atmosphere. Well worth the trip and I would recommend calling for reservations.

This family-run restaurant is one of the finest in Kansas, and serves the best dinner between Denver and Lawrence. Fresh and ripe local produce, steaks, home-baked breads, and possibly the best catfish north of New Orleans. Incomparable atmosphere; a destination in itself.

While passing through Kansas, I was looking for a good dinner place to eat with my family later at night. The town it's in is certainly small, but not too far from the freeway. The waiters/waitresses are very friendly and patient, while the taxidermy animals on the wall are certainly entertaining. In terms of food, it has what one would expect from a family steak house--chicken, buffalo, filet mignon, salad, potatoes, corn etc. They even had a few organic items, and had all sizes of meat, accompanying each meal with some sweet raisin bread. As a passer by I was very satisfied with the meal, and certainly recommend it to those with about an hour to spare for a great meal. And also the lemonade was great!

Four of us travelled from Kansas City to Russell for our annual visit to Cheyenne Bottoms. We used Yelp to find a nice place for dinner. Options were limited, but Bunker Hill Cafe wasn't far and had 5 good reviews. We called to verify menu and hours and they were very friendly on the phone. The cafe is in an historical building (nearly a century old) which our group can really appreciate. Though I would love to see the building fully restored, its historical charm did not disappoint. Upon arrival we were immediately greeted by an assortment of strongly opinionated, politically charged bumper stickers decorating the front door. We do NOT agree that guns are "peacekeepers" and one of us is blessed to have access and coverage by "obamacare", but we were there and hungry and were seated promptly. The server was the only staff member we interacted with. She managed all aspects of the dining room alone and did so competently. The menu was simple- steak, chicken or limited seafood, and the food was tasty. I had the catfish and it was very pleasantly breaded and fried. The raisin bread came out warm, just before the entree (though we hinted we would've liked it sooner). Others in my party had the chicken fried steak (they do not serve gravy) and the 2 oz filet. The only food that was not enjoyed was the fried rice with vegetables (overly salty). We averaged $20 each for our meals, no drinks. At meals end, we were informed that they only accepted cash and check. I assumed they were kidding but she was earnest. Two of our party had to drive to the truckstop off the highway and eat $10 in total, combined atm fees so we could pay our bill. We were well fed, but left frustrated. Not sure we would return.

The best food in Kansas! They start with fresh, quality ingredients and cook it to order just as you like and in the quantity you want. If you are traveling between Hays and Salina, KS on a Thursday-Saturday evening, stop and you will leave full. The best service too!
